Which, for me, means that more than a few people will tell me I should have had sex in a different month. Because the boys are xmas bookends, five days on either side. Sometimes, they are extra helpful and tell me what month I should have had sex in, in order to have appropriate bdays. So that when I travel back in my time machine, I can right this wrong. But joke’s on you, motherfuckers, because I did have sex in the “right” month. It’s just that neither of them could wait for the new year to make their grand entrance.

I mean, it does sort of suck because no one wants to come to a bday party right before xmas or right before new year’s, even if they aren’t away, so I don’t even have them. We just take them somewhere for a day trip. And it sucks because they have to share their bday with xmas and each other.

But still. Stop telling me I fucked on the wrong days.

Do as my family does: Don’t celebrate Christmas. Problem solved!

I saw this “important cultural property” at the Metropolitan Museum this evening. It depresses me to see well-made things locked up behind glass. But then who among us has the discipline and training to wear armor such as this? Maybe it’s all for the best.

Happy birthday, Coleman Hawkins, born 11/21/04 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Here’s his most famous recording, “Body and Soul,” from 1939.

The first of the great jazz saxophonoists, Hawkins played with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra throughout the ’20s, alongside Louis Armstrong. Decades later he led what’s considered to be the first bebop recording, in 1944, with Dizzy Gillespie and Max Roach.

WKCR is celebrating with an all-day broadcast of his music, on 89.9 FM and streaming at wkcr.org.
